Approximately 100 ophthalmologists with expertise or interest in glaucoma management met in Brisbane on the 6th and 7th February for the annual Australia and New Zealand Glaucoma Interest Group (ANZGIG) Meeting. The international guest speaker, Dr Arthur Sit from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota USA, delivered a number of interesting presentations of the risk of developing glaucoma related blindness and the measurement of intraocular pressure and episcleral venous pressure. Dr Mark Loane, former Wallaby and practicing ophthalmologist updated us on the fabulous work he is doing with indigenous communities in rural and remote Queensland. Dr Justin Marshall’s fascinating presentation on colour vision in tropical fish was very well received.

There were also presentations by glaucoma researchers from Australia, New Zealand and Singapore on the clinical and laboratory work they’ve been doing. My own report on the outcomes of Deep Sclerectomy performed at Sydney Eye Hospital over the past 3 years for open angle glaucoma was very well received.
